The Minister for the Interior, Muntaka Mubarak, and the Minister for Energy and Green Transition, John Jinapor, are anticipated to appear before Parliament in the upcoming week to discuss pressing issues regarding the absence of life jackets in communities reliant on water transport.
Their appearance is prompted by the unfortunate drowning of seven students from Lawra Senior High School, who tragically lost their lives while attempting to cross the Black Volta on June 13, 2025.
Considering the significance of the Volta River in this incident, the inclusion of the Energy Minister is intended to facilitate discussions concerning the communities situated along the Volta River.
During a parliamentary session held on Tuesday, June 17, Second Deputy Speaker Andrew Asiamah Amoako supported a proposal put forth by Majority Chief Whip Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor for the ministers to present themselves before the House. He characterized the matter as critical and in urgent need of action.
“If we can examine the budget of the Interior Ministry to allocate a specific portion of their funds to address this emergency, it is of utmost importance,” he stated.
In the meantime, the Member of Parliament for Lawra, Bede Ziedeng, has called upon the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), the Regional Coordinating Council, and the Lawra Municipal Assembly to promptly provide life jackets to the communities along the Black Volta.
“I urge NADMO, the Regional Coordinating Council, and the Lawra Municipal Assembly to assist Lawra SHS and the families of the deceased,” he remarked.
Ziedeng also committed to donating ten life jackets to the affected communities and called on Parliament to enact immediate legislative measures to avert further tragedies.
