The National Road Safety Authority (NRSA) has set a 21-day deadline for all Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Assemblies (MMDAs) in the Greater Accra Region to dismantle outdoor advertising billboards located on pedestrian bridges and vehicular footbridges.
This directive arises from increasing concerns regarding adherence to the Services-Advertising Specification for Outdoor Signs (GS: 847:2019), which explicitly states that “the primary and sole function of road or bridge arches/gantries shall be for traffic management.”
In its announcement, the NRSA emphasized that this initiative aims to enhance road safety by removing visual distractions and ensuring that essential road infrastructure is utilized correctly.
“We are implementing this measure to minimize visual distractions on our roads and to guarantee that structures such as footbridges and overpasses fulfill their intended role—facilitating safe and efficient traffic management,” the Authority remarked.
The Assemblies have been allotted a 21-day period to comply, after which the NRSA indicated it would take enforcement actions against any violators.
“This is not merely a regulatory obligation; it is about safeguarding lives. Advertising should not compromise road safety,” the statement concluded, underscoring that the directive serves the public’s best interests.
