Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, the former Energy Minister and the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) 2024 Vice Presidential candidate, has disclosed that the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB) is investigating him.
The former Minister of Education indicated that this investigation relates to his time at the Ministry of Education.
During a press conference in Accra on June 4, 2025, Dr. Opoku Prempeh—widely known as NAPO—revealed that he had been summoned by the NIB on two separate occasions to provide information regarding his tenure in office.
“As I am speaking to you now, I have received two invitations from the NIB to respond to inquiries concerning my period as Education Minister—there are certain matters I do not even recall. However, the documentation exists to substantiate this,” he remarked.
Recently, the new administration led by President John Dramani Mahama has commenced investigations into the actions of former government officials.
Various security agencies have initiated inquiries into previous transactions conducted under the former government. Alongside Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the NPP, Bernard Antwi Boasiako—popularly referred to as Chairman Wontumi—is also being investigated by the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) for suspected money laundering and corruption.
In the meantime, President John Dramani Mahama has announced that the Attorney-General and Minister for Justice is in the process of compiling 33 cases of corruption and related offenses against former government officials.
These cases arise from investigations carried out by the Operation Recover All Loot (ORAL) Team, an anti-corruption task force established by President Mahama following his electoral victory in 2024.
The team was assigned the responsibility of collecting information on alleged corruption, particularly during the previous administration and submitting it to the relevant state agencies for further action.
