The newly appointed Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Chamber of Mines, Dr. Ken Ashigbey, has reiterated his dedication to combating illegal mining, commonly referred to as galamsey, asserting that his position on this matter remains steadfast despite his recent appointment.
Dr. Ashigbey, who concurrently holds the role of Convener of the Media Coalition Against Galamsey, stated that his leadership role at the Chamber would only strengthen his commitment to advocating for responsible and sustainable mining practices within the nation.
In a media interview conducted on Tuesday, June 10, he highlighted that his new appointment offers enhanced opportunities to influence industry stakeholders and facilitate more significant engagements.
“There is a synergy between the Chamber itself and the goal of ensuring that Ghana engages in sustainable mining practices,” Dr. Ashigbey remarked. “Therefore, I do not anticipate that much will change. I merely hope that my colleagues in the Ghana Coalition Against Galamsey will also rise to the occasion and assume some of the responsibility.”
He further mentioned that the Chamber will now act as a strategic platform for dialogue and advocacy among stakeholders.
“The only noticeable change may be that, due to the opportunities afforded to me, a greater portion of the engagement with stakeholders will utilize the Chamber as the medium,” he clarified.
