The Mortuaries and Funeral Facilities Agency (MoFFA) has issued an immediate, one-week deadline for all mortuaries and funeral facilities operating without valid licenses to urgently regularize their operations or face imminent closure.
In a press release dated October 22, 2025, the Agency emphasized its mandate under Part Two of the Health Institutions and Facilities Act, 2011 (Act 829) to license, control, and regulate all facilities involved in the storage, transportation, and disposal of human remains.
MoFFA expressed concern regarding the continued illegal operation of several mortuaries and funeral homes, which violates Section 55 of Act 829. This section states that any individual operating a facility without proper registration or licensing commits an offense and may incur a fine or face temporary or permanent closure of the facility.
“All operators of facilities and practitioners are hereby advised by this notice to take necessary steps to regularize their operations or risk the closure of their facilities,” the statement cautioned.
Affected operators should contact MoFFA at the former Ministry of Health Main Building, Room 22, or visit www.moffa.gov.gh for assistance.
MoFFA reiterated its commitment to ensuring dignity in death and public health safety, adhering to its motto, “Protecting the Living; Dignifying the Dead.”
