The Mayor of Kumasi, Richard Ofori Boadi Agyemang, has conveyed profound sorrow regarding the fire that ravaged the China City Mall at Santasi, leading to the destruction of millions of dollars’ worth of goods and property.
The blaze, which ignited on Thursday at the rear of the structure, swiftly consumed the mall, inflicting significant damage on stores that offered groceries, electronics, and household items. Eyewitnesses indicated that the flames spread with such speed that numerous traders were unable to salvage their merchandise.
In his remarks about the incident, Mayor Agyemang stated, “It is regrettable that we have incurred losses amounting to millions of dollars due to this fire, and it is indeed tragic. I have been informed that the owners are currently abroad, but their employees and representatives are present.
“We will make every effort to engage with the investors as soon as possible, reassure them, and extend the nation’s support. These are foreign investors who have chosen to invest in our country. They provide employment to hundreds of our young people, so we will do everything within our power to assist them in returning, if feasible.”
The mayor assured the public that there were no fatalities resulting from the incident, emphasizing that all personnel were safely evacuated with the help of firefighters and bystanders.
“The fire department successfully evacuated all staff members. All workers, aided by bystanders, managed to escape. What remains are the losses we have incurred,” he remarked.
China City Mall, which opened its doors earlier this year, has quickly become a favored shopping venue for residents of Kumasi. The Ghana National Fire Service is presently conducting an investigation into the cause of the fire and evaluating the full scope of the damage.
