President John Dramani Mahama has declared intentions to conduct an investigation into the National Cathedral Project, which was initiated by former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo as a national Christian worship center and a representation of Ghana’s religious heritage.
This project has faced numerous allegations of corruption and financial mismanagement, leading to significant concerns regarding its implementation and funding.
During a Christian National Prayer and Thanksgiving Service held on Sunday, January 12, 2025, at the University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA), President Mahama expressed doubts about the financial viability of the project, particularly in light of Ghana’s ongoing economic challenges.
“Regarding the contentious matter of the National Cathedral, CHRAJ has instructed the government to conduct an audit of the project and investigate any potential misuse of public funds. We will soon initiate an investigation into this matter,” he remarked.
He also criticized the project’s financial implications, stating, “Given the current situation in Ghana, it is unreasonable to pursue a project costing $400 million. I have been informed that the National Ecumenical Centre in Abuja, which serves the Christian community in Nigeria, was constructed for $30 million.”
The president stated that should his administration opt to proceed with the project, the site will be reassessed.
“This reassessment may potentially involve altering the presently selected location for the project,” he remarked.
President Mahama further underscored that public funds would not be allocated for the project, asserting, “Regarding the future of the Cathedral project, I believe it is essential for all of us, as Christians, to reach a consensus on how to realize this initiative without relying on state resources.”
