President John Dramani Mahama has denounced the recent outbreak of violence in Bawku, expressing his belief that the peace initiative led by Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II will ultimately foster enduring stability in the region.
On Thursday, April 10, Bawku experienced a violent clash between law enforcement and local youth, which reportedly resulted in fatalities and injuries. Additionally, the private residence of Member of Parliament Mahama Ayariga was allegedly set on fire amid the unrest.
During his address at the Graduation Parade of the Ghana Military Academy on Friday, April 11, 2025, President Mahama reaffirmed his administration’s dedication to restoring peace in the affected area.
“The Ghana Armed Forces are actively addressing various threats to uphold peace and security across our nation. The Bawku region is a significant flashpoint. Just two days ago, an incident in the market led to tragic loss of life and acts of vandalism. It is important to stress that no one benefits from this conflict and the resulting insecurities,” he remarked.
He emphasized that the mediation process initiated by the Asantehene, which involves all relevant stakeholders, is the most effective path to achieving peace.
“We have initiated the Otumfuo mediation process, which includes all stakeholders to create a roadmap towards peace. I have been assured by the Asantehene that the process will continue next week upon his return from a brief trip abroad,” he noted.
President Mahama also underscored that his government will thoroughly investigate all allegations of criminal activity, pledging to take decisive action.
“We will treat all allegations of crime with the utmost seriousness and activate our security services to pursue offenders, regardless of their identity. However, I must emphasize that we do not have the resources or time to engage in any deceptive practices,” he concluded.
