Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, the Former Majority Leader and current Member of Parliament for Suame, has suggested that Parliament’s leadership should have a constructive conversation with the Speaker of the House to address the ongoing deadlock that is causing disruptions in parliamentary activities.
As the December 7 general elections approach, Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu emphasized the significance of parliamentary unity and efficiency. It is crucial to address the issues within the House to ensure they do not affect the upcoming elections.
Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu emphasized the importance of communication and collaboration in proactively addressing the tensions that have emerged after the Speaker declared four parliamentary seats vacant on Thursday, October 17.
Alban Bagbin’s declaration resulted in the House adjourning indefinitely, causing concerns about the potential consequences if these issues are not addressed.
He added that if Parliament remains deadlocked, it could impact the essential legal and procedural frameworks necessary for a successful election process.
The Suame legislator stated that the Electoral Commission has not yet brought a Constitutional Instrument before Parliament, as required. He stated that the CI will establish the necessary legal guidelines for the December 7 elections, noting that without it, the electoral processes could be incomplete and the timeline disrupted.
Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu spoke to the media on Monday, October 28 and emphasized the importance of engaging in the electoral process. Every time the presidential and general elections are scheduled to take place, the Electoral Commission will bring a CI to regulate the elections if they must be held.
What if they have not brought it? What will happen to the elections? A vote on account for the next financial year is needed, but it has not been done yet. I believe it is necessary for Parliament to be reconvened in order to address this issue.
