The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Mr. Christian Tetteh Yohuno, is at the helm of a specialized team comprising operations, investigation, and intelligence officers who are heading to Bawku in the Upper East Region to evaluate the current security conditions.
This initiative comes in the wake of a violent clash between local youth and law enforcement, which resulted in the tragic death of one individual, Fuseini Iddrisu.
Additionally, five others, including a police officer and an immigration officer, suffered gunshot injuries and are presently undergoing medical care.
Order was restored in Bawku on April 9, 2025, through a collaborative effort by the Ghana Police Service and the Ghana Armed Forces.
However, unrest resurfaced on Thursday, April 10, when a group of frustrated youth reportedly set fire to the residence of the local Member of Parliament, Mahama Ayariga, in Wiidi, a neighborhood of Bawku.
Initial reports suggest that the MP’s home was first targeted by youths throwing stones, which resulted in broken windows and damage to the structure. This attack escalated into an arson incident the following morning.
The violence is thought to have been incited by public anger over the alleged police shooting of a young man.
In a statement issued by the Ghana Police Service on Thursday, April 10, it was noted, “During their visit to Bawku, the IGP and his team will express condolences to the family of the deceased, visit the injured individuals receiving treatment, and reach out to officers who have suffered property losses due to the unrest.”
The Police reaffirmed their commitment to working alongside the Ghana Armed Forces, traditional leaders, community influencers, and other stakeholders to uphold peace, security, and lawfulness in Bawku.
