President John Dramani Mahama has conveyed a strong message to his appointed ministers, emphasizing that their evaluation will be based on their performance rather than mere attendance.
In his address at the commencement of a four-day Executive Leadership Programme for Ministerial Appointees on Thursday, April 24, 2025, the President reminded the attendees that their responsibilities are rooted in public confidence and the pressing necessity for transformation.
‘You were not chosen to fill positions. You were selected to address challenges,’ Mahama asserted. ‘The citizens of Ghana anticipate our delivery. We must fulfill this expectation—not with justifications, but with tangible outcomes.’
He emphasized that the retreat, organized in collaboration with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), serves a purpose beyond mere orientation.
Mahama articulated it as the initiation of a shift in leadership thought and action. “Our objective extends beyond simply orienting ministers; we aim to cultivate a unified mindset,” he stated, encouraging the newly appointed officials to abandon obsolete governance frameworks and adopt a revitalized dedication to service.
“The traditional approach is ineffective; it is indeed obsolete, and we must put it to rest permanently,” he asserted.
President Mahama urged his ministers to consider the increasing expectations of Ghanaians, particularly among the youth, farmers, and small business owners, who are eager for advancement.
He expressed that the younger generation is weary of prolonged waiting, and that farmers, workers, and entrepreneurs aspire to live with dignity and prosperity.
He emphasized that accountability will remain a priority during his tenure, warning that ministers must take their responsibilities seriously or face replacement. Mahama concluded by stating, ‘If any of us fail to meet expectations, I will not hesitate to take action.’
The leadership program aims to unite ministers, private sector leaders, and development partners to create a collective vision for effective and accountable governance in the new administration.
