The Ghana Grid Company Ltd (GRIDCo) has reassured the public regarding the implementation of strategies to avert power outages, commonly referred to as “dumsor,” during the rescheduled maintenance conducted by the West Africa Gas Pipeline Company (WAPCo). This maintenance commenced on February 5 and is anticipated to be completed by March 2, 2025.
In a collaborative announcement, GRIDCo and the Electricity Company of Ghana Ltd (ECG) stated that, under the guidance of the Ministry of Energy and Green Transition, significant quantities of liquid fuel have been procured to supply essential plants in Tema as an alternative energy source.
In an interview, Nana Amoasi VII, Executive Director of the Institute of Energy Security (IES), praised the government’s proactive measures in securing liquid fuel reserves to maintain electricity supply.
“The delay in the maintenance schedule provides the government with sufficient time to accumulate liquid fuel reserves. Should the maintenance proceed and the national gas supply to power plants in the Eastern region be interrupted, there will be adequate liquid fuel to keep the plants operational,” he elaborated.
Amoasi also emphasized that facilities such as Asogli and the entire Tema power plant will remain unaffected, thereby ensuring no reduction in generation capacity.
“This will enable the government to act with assurance, sidestepping criticism, and guaranteeing that consumers benefit from a consistent and dependable power supply,” he concluded.
