The Mahama administration is set to present a new legislative proposal in Parliament aimed at renaming the C.K. Tedam University of Technology and Applied Sciences (CKT-UTAS) along with several other public universities nationwide.
The announcement was made by the Minister of Education, Haruna Iddrisu, during the inauguration ceremony of the Governing Council of CKT-UTAS in Accra.
Established in 2021, CKT-UTAS was designed to equip students with practical and technical skills for the global job market; however, it has encountered various infrastructural issues that have hindered its academic progress.
Furthermore, the university’s name has elicited mixed responses from the public, with some stakeholders expressing opposition from the outset.
The Minister noted that this initiative is part of a larger effort to reassess and possibly rename several public universities that were established or renamed during the administration of former President Nana Akufo-Addo.
We have engaged in comprehensive discussions with various stakeholders, including the academic community, traditional leaders, alumni groups, students, and civil society.
Consequently, it is anticipated that the name C.K. Tedam University of Technology and Applied Sciences may be altered, potentially returning to its original vision.
Haruna Iddrisu indicated that a general bill will be introduced to address the renaming of several public universities that were renamed or established during the tenure of former President Akufo-Addo.
He emphasized that the government’s initiative to rename these institutions is not meant to diminish the contributions of the individuals after whom they were named.
Rather, the objective of the renaming is to better align with the foundational principles and historical identities of the universities.
Among those likely to be impacted by this review are the University of Mines and Technology and Abdulai Salifu University.
This proposed initiative is part of a larger effort to reevaluate the naming conventions of public universities established or renamed during the administration of former President Nana Akufo-Addo.
The government is anticipated to present a bill in Parliament shortly to formalize the renaming process.
