The Minister for Roads and Highways, Governs Kwame Agbodza, has declared that the government plans to disburse GH¢4 billion by the conclusion of July 2025 to address a portion of the nation’s escalating road sector debt.
Currently, Ghana’s total road debt surpasses GH¢21 billion, a significant burden that has considerably hindered progress on essential infrastructure and delayed numerous ongoing road construction projects across the country.
During a press briefing held in Accra on Tuesday, the Minister disclosed that the Ministry of Finance is in the advanced stages of processing the GH¢4 billion payment, emphasizing that this action reflects the current administration’s dedication to restoring contractor confidence and resuming halted works.
He further noted that the government is set to initiate the first phase of its flagship infrastructure program, the ‘Big Push,’ this month, July.
“We have completed the studies, design, and costing for the first phase of the Big Push project. We are currently in the process of obtaining the necessary permissions as stipulated in the Public Financial Management Act to commence these works starting this month,” he remarked.
