The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) has formally apologized to the Ashanti Regional Minister following comments made by its Public Relations Officer, ADOI Alex King Nartey, regarding the recent fire incident in Adum, Kumasi Metropolis.
A significant fire erupted on Friday, resulting in the destruction of over 5,000 shops and extensive damage.
The fire, which ignited in the early morning hours, continued to blaze until it was finally contained by Sunday morning.
During the crisis, Ashanti Regional Minister Dr. Frank Amoakohene confronted officials from the fire service, voicing his dissatisfaction with what he viewed as a delayed response. This led to a public exchange when GNFS PRO Alex Nartey remarked, “Shouting doesn’t quench fire,” which the Minister found disrespectful and subsequently called for a public apology.
In a letter dated March 24, 2025, Acting Chief Fire Officer Daniella M. Ntow Sapong characterized Nartey’s comments as “uncomplimentary” and expressed regret for the remarks made towards regional authorities.
She assured that appropriate disciplinary actions would be implemented to prevent similar incidents in the future and reaffirmed the GNFS’s commitment to aiding efforts aimed at reducing fire outbreaks in the Ashanti Region.
The letter also highlighted the service’s dedication to working alongside stakeholders, including the Regional Security Council (REGSEC), to enhance fire response and management strategies.
