The Minister of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has declared that Ghana will commence the issuance of chip-embedded passports starting Monday, April 28, 2025.
He emphasized that the launch of these new biometric passports is intended to bolster passport security, eradicate the role of intermediaries, and enhance transparency in the passport application process.
The Minister affirmed the Ministry’s dedication to providing a smooth, citizen-focused passport service that is accessible to all Ghanaians while avoiding the challenges linked to third-party involvement.
This new initiative is part of a wider array of reforms being introduced by the Ministry this year.
The enhancements encompass the implementation of round-the-clock passport services, courier delivery of passports, electronic tracking options, and a 30 percent decrease in application fees.
The chip-embedded passports, currently utilized in various nations, securely store biometric data within a microchip, providing improved safeguards against identity theft and fraud.
Mr. Ablakwa reiterated the government’s dedication to digitization and reforming public services, characterizing this initiative as a significant step towards modernizing Ghana’s passport system.
