The trial of Bernard Antwi Boasiako, Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and commonly known as Chairman Wontumi, is scheduled to begin on Tuesday, October 7, 2025.
This case follows his appearance before the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service on Monday, October 6, 2025, in compliance with a directive from the Attorney General and Minister for Justice, Dr. Dominic Ayine.
Chairman Wontumi faces allegations of illegal mining activities and operating without a license, reportedly in connection with Akonta Mining Limited, a company with which he is affiliated.
He was granted bail of GH¢1 million in advance of the trial scheduled for Tuesday.
Chairman Wontumi’s attorney, Andy Appiah-Kubi, confirmed that the charges concern mining without a license and emphasized that the matter will be thoroughly examined in court.
However, he reiterated his client’s assertion of innocence.
“As you have observed, we will proceed to court, and that is where the resolution will be determined. We are not here to assert innocence, but we are permitted to advance and subsequently present our defense,” he stated.
