The Minority Leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has advocated for the elimination of aptitude tests based on artificial intelligence that are currently being utilized in the recruitment process for Ghana’s security services, pointing out significant challenges faced by applicants.
The Member of Parliament representing Effutu stated that his caucus, along with several other lawmakers, has received a multitude of complaints from constituents who were disqualified during the recruitment due to issues encountered with the online testing system.
During a session in Parliament on Tuesday, March 10, 2026, Afenyo-Markin called on the government to reassess the system to enhance accessibility for all applicants, especially those with limited digital skills.
“Mr. Speaker, the military has implemented a commendable initiative. They established a system that permits individuals to take the aptitude test in person. If feasible, the system should be modified to allow our young men and women who lack ICT education to complete it manually,” he stated.
He elaborated that numerous applicants from rural areas experience considerable challenges when trying to navigate the online testing system.
“I support AI. I support IT. However, it is unreasonable to expect someone from Pusiga or Bunkurugu, who has no knowledge of IT, to take an aptitude test using AI. If they lack the resources, they will fail,” he remarked.
Mr. Afenyo-Markin emphasized that this matter should not be politicized, but rather viewed as a systemic issue that necessitates immediate attention from the appropriate ministry.
He noted that many applicants are compelled to spend money at internet cafés to complete the tests, only to face technical difficulties that hinder their progress.
“I believe this is a significant systemic issue that the ministry must address thoroughly, as it is we, the MPs, who bear the consequences,” he concluded.
He consequently urged the government to reassess the existing system to guarantee that recruitment into the security services is equitable and available to all qualified candidates.
