A power outage took place on June 11, 2025, in the Ashanti Region as a result of a snake entering the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG)’s substation located in Kwaso within the Ejisu municipality.
The snake created a connection between the feeder and the ground, which led to an automatic shutdown of the Akyawkrom 2 feeder line.
ECG’s emergency response team restored power shortly after the occurrence. Officials indicate that this incident underscores a persistent issue of animals interfering with power infrastructure.
“Wildlife, particularly snakes and birds, continue to present significant threats to the reliability of the grid,” stated Collins Manu, ECG’s Ashanti Sub-Transmission Public Relations Officer.
He mentioned that ECG is making investments in snake guards, sealing cable entry points, clearing vegetation, and enhancing drainage systems to deter animal access to substations. The company is also urging the public to report any unusual activities near power facilities.
Ing. Peter K. Fletcher, General Manager of Ashanti Sub-Transmission, noted that early notifications from the public are crucial in preventing outages.
The state-owned power distributor asserts that wildlife intrusion remains a non-technical risk to grid stability and is intensifying efforts to mitigate such occurrences.
