Ing. Kirk Koffi, the former Chief Executive Officer of the Volta River Authority (VRA), has advocated for the establishment of a new hydroelectric power facility at Pwalugu to boost energy production and mitigate flooding in northern Ghana.
In an interview with Umaru Sanda Amadu on Tuesday, May 20, Ing. Koffi underscored the strategic significance of the proposed Pwalugu dam for enhancing energy security and agricultural output.
He pointed out that the dam would not only facilitate better water management but also play a crucial role in advancing Ghana’s food security and renewable energy objectives.
‘We should prioritize the Pwalugu dam due to its critical importance. Our nation needs to have a reliable food supply,’ he asserted.
Ing. Koffi further elaborated that the existing water management system in the northern region results in substantial water wastage and flooding, primarily because of the flat landscape, which restricts the amount of water flowing into the Akosombo Lake.
‘The small facility produces a significant amount of grains, and when there is minimal spillage, it leads to flooding in the North.
The flat terrain exacerbates this issue, as it does not significantly affect the inflows into the Akosombo lake; instead, the water disperses. Constructing the dam will help manage the floods effectively,’ he explained.
