Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, the Ranking Member of the Economy and Development Committee and Member of Parliament for Ofoase Ayirebi, has called on the government to prioritize the consolidation of the advancements achieved in Ghana’s economy rather than jeopardizing them for political gain.
His remarks come in light of the minority’s assertion that the recent staff-level agreement between the government and the International Monetary Fund (IMF) validates the actions of the previous New Patriotic Party (NPP) administration.
This statement counters claims made by the current government, which alleges that the former administration violated the IMF program and mismanaged the economy.
In an interview on Tuesday, April 15, Nkrumah highlighted the necessity for policy continuity and accountable governance.
“The government should focus on building upon the progress made, rather than seeking to undermine the achievements of the Ghanaian economy at every opportunity,” he remarked.
He accused the current administration of intentionally discrediting economic data for political advantage, a tactic he believes has been refuted by the IMF’s own evaluations.
“Their efforts to undermine the economic data for political gain have now been revealed by the fund,” he asserted.
Nkrumah also conveyed his optimism regarding the trajectory of Ghana’s economy, stressing the significance of bipartisan cooperation.
“We celebrate progress in Ghana, regardless of whether it is under the NPP or NDC,” he stated, noting that the IMF’s findings confirm that the country remains on a positive path.
