A 16-year-old boy, the son of prominent Ghanaian pastor Bishop Salifu Amoako, has been sentenced to six months at a senior correctional facility due to his involvement in a tragic accident in East Legon, Accra.
The incident, which took place on October 12, resulted in the deaths of two young girls, Justine Agbenu and Maame Dwomoh.
The collision led to a fire that consumed both vehicles. While the teenager and his passenger managed to escape, the two girls in the other car sadly lost their lives in the flames. The driver of the other vehicle, along with one of the girls, was rescued.
The court’s ruling highlights the gravity of the charges against the minor, who pleaded guilty to eight counts, including two counts of manslaughter.
The young offender faced several charges, such as manslaughter, causing harm through negligence, dangerous driving, and operating a vehicle without a valid license.
The prosecution indicated that the teenager was driving without supervision at the time of the accident, which resulted in the fatalities.
This case has ignited extensive discussions regarding road safety, parental responsibilities, and the implications of permitting minors to drive without appropriate authorization.
The sentencing serves as a reminder of the urgent need for stricter enforcement of traffic laws to avert similar tragic occurrences in the future.
The court also stressed the significance of deterrence, especially concerning minors engaging in unlawful driving practices.
