AngloGold Ashanti Ghana has reported a fatal confrontation between illegal miners and military forces within its secured operational zone in the northern part of the Obuasi concession.
This incident, which took place on January 18, 2025, in Obuasi, Ashanti Region, escalated tensions, leading to the destruction of four vehicles during the altercation.
In a statement issued on January 19, AngloGold Ashanti disclosed that a significant number of armed illegal miners attempted to unlawfully access the mine’s facilities.
The company reassured the public that order has been restored and highlighted its continued partnership with authorities to manage the situation and avert future incidents.
“AngloGold Ashanti Ghana confirms that on the evening of January 18, an event transpired within the secured operational area in the northern section of the company’s Obuasi concession. A substantial group of armed illegal miners sought to forcibly breach access to mine infrastructure. Authorities were mobilized to counter this assault and to safeguard the well-being of employees and nearby residents.
“The current situation at the mine is stable, and the Company is collaborating closely with the authorities. Our foremost priority is the safety and health of all our employees and those in the community who have been directly affected by this event.”
The Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) stated that military personnel acted in self-defense when they were fired upon by illegal miners.
GAF confirmed that seven illegal miners lost their lives in this incident, with several others, including a member of the public security forces, sustaining injuries.

The government has initiated an investigation into the incident and has instructed AngloGold Ashanti to cover the medical costs for the injured.
Furthermore, Kwaku Kwarteng, the Member of Parliament for Obuasi West, has called for an immediate inquiry into the matter.
