President John Dramani Mahama has conveyed deep sorrow regarding the tragic loss of six young women during the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) recruitment event held at the El-Wak Sports Stadium in Accra.
While addressing attendees at the launch of the Nkoko Nkitinkiti Poultry Initiative in Kumasi on Wednesday, November 12, the President characterized the event as “a heart-breaking loss for the entire nation,” highlighting that all six victims were female applicants who had arrived at the stadium with aspirations of serving their country.
“The tragic news is that I have been informed by the military that six young women, who simply sought an opportunity to serve their nation, lost their lives in this heart-breaking incident. We are praying for the 12 others who remain in critical condition,” the President stated.
He offered condolences to the grieving families and expressed hopes for a swift recovery for the injured.
The President also called for a comprehensive investigation into the factors that contributed to the incident, stressing the importance of enhanced safety protocols during public recruitment and national events.
The fatal stampede took place on Wednesday, November 12, 2025, when thousands of job seekers gathered at the El-Wak Sports Stadium for a Ghana Armed Forces recruitment exercise.
The Ghana Armed Forces has confirmed the deaths of six individuals, with several others injured and currently receiving treatment at the 37 Military Hospital.
The recruitment exercise has been put on hold until further notice as investigations are ongoing.
