The Ghana Football Association (GFA) and Black Stars head coach Carlos Queiroz have reached a mutual agreement to end his service contract after consultations between the two parties.
The GFA announced the decision in an official statement released on Thursday, October 1, 2026.
The specific circumstances precipitating the termination have not been comprehensively revealed, and it remains uncertain whether the decision is attributable to the Black Stars’ recent performance in the ongoing 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifying campaign.
Ghana experienced a 2-0 loss to Côte d’Ivoire and subsequently suffered a 4-2 defeat to The Gambia in their latest qualifying encounters.
In his statement, Carlos Queiroz indicated that both parties concurred that concluding their professional engagement represented the most prudent course of action given the prevailing circumstances.
Queiroz expressed gratitude to the GFA, particularly its President, for the confidence and opportunity afforded to him in leading the national team.
He stated that he arrived in Ghana with the determination to facilitate the development of a more robust future for the Black Stars and to advance the growth of the nation’s football capabilities.
“Notwithstanding our dedication and exertions, the requisite conditions were not adequately established, and our recent performance contributed to the determination to conclude this engagement,” he stated.
The Portuguese coach further conveyed his appreciation to his technical personnel and other individuals who provided support to the team, particularly during preparations for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
He also acknowledged the Black Stars players and encouraged the Ghanaian populace to sustain their backing of the team.
“The capability and promise are evident. Through collective unity, sustained support, and an appropriate framework, this cohort possesses the capacity to accomplish significant achievements for Ghana.”
Queiroz additionally expressed his gratitude to the Ghanaian people and Black Stars supporters for their enthusiasm and backing, affirming that he would depart with “respect, gratitude and pride.”
