The government is undertaking plans to establish new landfill facilities in the Greater Accra and Eastern regions as part of its comprehensive strategy to manage the escalating waste generation occurring throughout the nation.
Mahama Ayariga, the Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, stated that the enhancement of waste-management infrastructure has become imperative as current facilities experience mounting strain.
He revealed that the Kpone landfill has attained full capacity and initiatives are in progress to close the installation.
“We have plans to construct new landfill sites across the Greater Accra area and Eastern Region to accommodate the waste that is being generated,” Ayariga stated during an appearance on Eyewitness News on Monday, September 29, 2026.
“The Kpone landfill site, as you can see, is full. So we’re in the process of planning its decommissioning,” he further noted.
The Minister elaborated that the scarcity of accessible engineered landfill infrastructure in certain regions of the country constituted one of the principal justifications for the decision to relocate waste from Agbogbloshie to an alternative landfill facility.
In addition to augmenting landfill capacity, Mr Ayariga indicated that the government was also evaluating substitute waste-management methodologies, encompassing incineration and waste-to-energy conversion systems.
“I agree with him that there are new ideas about how to manage waste such as incineration and the conversion of waste to energy through burning it and then using the heat to generate energy,” he remarked.
He noted that the government was actively consulting with relevant parties regarding the implementation of such technologies as components of Ghana’s comprehensive waste-management framework.
“I have had those; even this morning I was in a meeting discussing how we should do that as a country,” he concluded.
Mr Ayariga indicated that the government’s comprehensive strategy would endeavor to transition away from exclusive dependence on landfill disposal by investigating methods to transform waste into valuable commodities, including energy resources.
