The Ghana Police Service has apprehended five individuals suspected of being part of an armed robbery gang that allegedly targets gold dealers, mining sites, and communities in various areas of the Ashanti and Western regions.
The arrests occurred during a series of intelligence-driven operations carried out between August and September 4, 2026.
Authorities reported that another suspect, a 40-year-old named Seidu Salifu, died during these operations.
Recovered items included three AK-47 assault rifles, 357 rounds of ammunition, five magazines, and two vehicles.
The Police Service indicated that the gang is believed to have operated in Wassa Akropong, Diaso, Dome, Abofour Camp, and the Manso enclave.
The individuals taken into custody have been identified as 33-year-old Clinton Mawuli, Richmond Mensah, known as “Master Abey”, Daniel Sarfo, referred to as “Abedi”, Prince Duker, and one additional suspect.
Authorities noted that Salifu, who had connections to prior robbery incidents near Sakam close to Offinso, was facing trial at the Nsuta Circuit Court for an alleged robbery involving gold bullion that took place in July 2025 at Offinso Abofour.
In a separate intelligence-led operation on August 21, the Western Regional Police Command arrested four suspects linked to the robbery and murder of 40-year-old gold buyer Seth Kobina at Agona Fie, located near Agona Nkwanta.
The suspects have been identified as Christopher Seyiri, known as “Cross and Die”, aged 47; Bashiru Ibrahim, aged 20; Thomas Odoom, known as “Wale”, aged 30; and Isaac Quayeson, known as “Last Burial”, who was apprehended at Denkyira Kwaboso in the Western North Region.
The Police Service reported the recovery of two locally made pistols, five live BB cartridges, a metal bar, and two cutlasses from the suspects.
In response to the arrests, the Service announced the deployment of special teams to the affected communities to enhance security and deter further attacks.
The deployment aims to allow residents, traders, and other community members to carry out their daily activities without fear while investigations into the alleged crimes are ongoing.
The Police Service stated that additional updates will be shared as the investigations advance.
