The Minister for the Interior, Muntaka Mubarak Mohammed, has revealed that a minimum of 10 recruits have been expelled from Ghana’s security services training schools for breaching a directive that forbids the use of mobile phones during training.
The Minister stated that the dismissed recruits were discovered to have secretly retained mobile phones, despite the requirement to surrender their devices upon arrival at the training institutions.
He indicated that these dismissals are part of a broader initiative to uphold discipline and ensure that recruits adhere to the rules and regulations governing their training.
The Minister shared this information during an engagement with students of Sakafiya Islamic Senior High School in Kumasi, where he discussed the recruitment process for Ghana’s security services and the standards expected of individuals aspiring to join these services.
Muntaka Mubarak expressed his concern regarding the lack of discipline among certain recruits, particularly those who attempt to bypass established rules after being admitted to the training schools.
He elaborated that the recent recruitment drive attracted an exceptionally large number of applicants, with reports indicating that over half a million individuals applied for positions within the security services.
Nevertheless, only approximately 10,000 applicants were ultimately chosen for training, rendering the recruitment process highly competitive.
The Minister remarked that the substantial number of applicants reflects a significant interest among young Ghanaians in pursuing careers in the country’s security services.
He emphasized that successful applicants must recognize that gaining admission to a training institution entails responsibilities, including strict compliance with institutional rules.
“The process was so rigorous that over half a million individuals applied. We ultimately selected only 10,000. Indiscipline was evident, as some recruits attempted to conceal their phones in their pillows. Upon arrival at the training school, all phones are confiscated.”
A number of individuals chose to conceal their phones and were making calls during the night. Some were apprehended. I have been informed that at least 10 students have been expelled from the training school for possessing phones.
