The Accra High Court has postponed the bail application pending appeal submitted by former New Patriotic Party (NPP) Ashanti Regional Chairman, Bernard Antwi Boasiako, commonly referred to as Chairman Wontumi, to 15 October 2026.
Wontumi’s legal representatives were anticipated to present the application on Wednesday, August 19; however, both the lead counsel, Samuel Atta Akyea, and Wontumi himself were not present in court.
Gary Nimako, the NPP’s Director of Legal Affairs, attended on the party’s behalf.
The court clerk notified the parties involved that the presiding judge was unavailable this week, resulting in the adjournment.
Deputy Attorney-General Justice Srem-Sai represented the state during the proceedings.
Wontumi is currently serving a 20-year prison sentence after being convicted by the Accra High Court for offences related to illegal mining associated with a concession in Samreboi, located in the Western Region.
His legal team submitted the bail application in August, requesting his release while his appeal against the conviction and sentence is processed; however, the Attorney-General has contested the application, labeling Wontumi as a flight risk.
The court is now set to review the bail application when the case reconvenes on 15 October.
