Dennis Miracles Aboagye, an aide to Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has refuted claims that his questioning by the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) is connected to purported financial and procurement irregularities amounting to GH¢55 million, asserting that this matter was never mentioned during his discussions with the investigators.
His comments followed his release on Tuesday, July 14, after fulfilling his bail conditions of GH¢50 million, having spent four days in EOCO custody.
“For the record: EOCO did not discuss any GH¢55 million with me. None!!!” he emphasized.
In reflecting on his time in detention, the former Executive Secretary of the Inter-Ministerial Coordinating Committee on Decentralisation (IMCCoD) remarked that attempts to intimidate him had been unsuccessful and had instead fortified his commitment to the opposition party.
Aboagye noted that his detention occurred just a day after he declared his intention to run for the position of National Communications Director of the NPP, contending that despite what he termed a “false narrative” regarding his arrest, the truth would ultimately come to light.
He also conveyed his gratitude to party supporters, NPP leadership, and his legal team for their unwavering support during his detention, stating that the solidarity he received had bolstered his resolve.
“I am out. I am unbroken. And I am more ready than ever,” he stated, affirming his dedication to leading the party’s communications efforts and his unwillingness to be swayed by what he characterized as intimidation.
Conversely, EOCO has asserted that Aboagye’s arrest is part of ongoing investigations into alleged financial and procurement irregularities involving approximately GH¢55 million during his time as Executive Secretary of the IMCCoD.
The anti-corruption agency has also confirmed the arrest of Gerald Appiah, the former IMCCoD accountant, alongside Aboagye, as inquiries into the alleged misconduct continue.
Aboagye was taken into custody on Sunday, July 12, upon his arrival at the Accra International Airport by immigration officials and was later transferred to EOCO.
His arrest sparked demonstrations from certain NPP supporters, who called for his prompt release and characterized the action as politically driven.
