The Minister for Communication, Digital Technology and Innovations, Sam Nartey George, has provided reassurance to employees of Ghana Digital Centres Limited (GDCL) that their jobs are secure despite the severe floods that have disrupted operations at the state-owned technology hub. He has also urged management to work towards transforming the company into a commercially viable entity.
This assurance was given just two weeks after the Ministry reversed a decision made by GDCL’s management to suspend the employment contracts of all staff following the floods on June 29, which caused damage to parts of the Accra Digital Centre.
The Ministry deemed this action unacceptable and instructed management to promptly reinstate the suspensions, reiterating the government’s commitment to job protection as recovery efforts progressed.
During a meeting with the Board, management, and staff on Monday, July 13, 2026, the Minister aimed to alleviate any lingering concerns regarding the future of employees.
“We will not be laying off any GDCL staff, either temporarily or permanently, due to the flood. Each of you is guaranteed the continuation of your employment.”
However, Mr. George emphasized that the government’s support comes with certain expectations, stating that the flooding should serve as a pivotal moment for repositioning the company as a financially sustainable business rather than merely returning to previous operations.
“Let’s view this as a reset of the reset. Every staff member must contribute, as it will not be business as usual.”
The Minister indicated that the Ministry would persist in supporting the Centre’s recovery while enhancing corporate governance, boosting operational efficiency, and ensuring long-term sustainability.
He asserted that GDCL has adequate assets to become a profitable state enterprise and indicated that management would be held responsible for achieving this goal.
“With the assets at your disposal, there is no justification for GDCL not to be profitable… It will not fail, not under my supervision.
GDCL accommodates technology companies, start-ups, and businesses centered on innovation at the Accra Digital Centre. Although operations faced interruptions due to the floods on June 29, the Centre has persisted in its recovery initiatives as the government strives to rebuild trust among tenants, investors, and the broader digital ecosystem.
