Authorities in the Ashanti North Region have confirmed that media figure Okatakyie Kwame Afrifa Mensah, along with another individual, is currently receiving medical care at the Mampong Government Hospital under police supervision. This follows incidents that occurred during the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) Ejura Sekyedumase East Constituency executive elections held in Wiamoase.
A statement released by the Ashanti North Regional Police Command on Monday, July 13, indicated that Kwame Afrifa Mensah, aged 43, and another suspect, Osman Awuni, aged 44, reported health issues after their apprehension on Sunday, July 12, necessitating their hospitalization for treatment.
“The two individuals remain under police supervision while they receive medical attention. Investigations are ongoing, and the public will be informed of any further updates,” the police statement noted.
According to police reports, Kwame Afrifa Mensah was taken into custody along with six other suspects following a violent incident at the SDA Church polling station, where the constituency elections were taking place.
The Command alleged that at approximately 7:45 a.m., Kwame Afrifa Mensah led a group of around 30 individuals to the polling location. When questioned by security personnel regarding their presence, the group reportedly became confrontational, assaulted police officers, and disrupted the electoral proceedings by scattering electoral materials on the ground.
The police reported that the remaining members of the group fled the scene, and efforts are currently being made to apprehend them.
Initial investigations by the police suggest that Kwame Afrifa Mensah asserted that some of his supporters had been excluded from the electoral process and claimed to have obtained an interlocutory injunction to prevent the elections from occurring.
However, the police stated that neither they nor the Electoral Commission had received any court order or injunction mandating the suspension of the elections.
The statement concluded that order was restored following police intervention, enabling voting to continue under sufficient security measures.
“The election concluded without incident at approximately 4:00 p.m., following which the Electoral Commission officially announced the results,” stated the police.
The Ashanti North Regional Police Command indicated that investigations are currently underway and reassured the public that additional updates will be shared as the case develops.
