The Mayor of Accra, Michael Kpakpo Allotey, has announced that the Assembly will persist in enhancing desilting, waste collection, enforcement, and public education efforts.
He emphasized that while the AMA undertakes these initiatives, residents also bear the responsibility to aid flood prevention by refraining from disposing of waste in drains and waterways.
In a prior media interview at Darkuman Kokompe, following a tour of several flooded areas, the Mayor mentioned that he had been informed by the Member of Parliament regarding the flooding situation, prompting his visit to evaluate it directly and determine the necessary response.
He stated that flooding in Accra continues to be a significant issue that necessitates coordinated efforts from all stakeholders.
The Mayor indicated that the Assembly would maintain collaboration with relevant agencies to enhance drainage management and enforce sanitation regulations to safeguard lives, property, and public infrastructure.
Hon. Allotey reassured affected residents that the AMA would not neglect them, adding that the Assembly would collaborate with the appropriate authorities to mobilize essential support for communities severely impacted by the rains.
He reiterated his administration’s dedication to creating a cleaner, safer, and more resilient Accra, highlighting that the battle against flooding demands both immediate response and ongoing preventive measures.
The Mayor urged residents, traders, transport operators, and property owners to cooperate with the Assembly’s sanitation and flood prevention initiatives.
He noted that the AMA would continue to monitor communities prone to flooding and take proactive measures to mitigate risks, protect vulnerable residents, and ensure that public spaces, drains, and roads remain safe and accessible.
Several residents who spoke with the Mayor voiced their concerns regarding the flooding in their neighborhoods and called for urgent action to enhance drainage and support affected households.
