Government spokesperson Felix Kwakye Ofosu has revealed that Ghana’s Attorney-General, Dominic Ayine, is anticipated to engage in high-level bilateral discussions with officials from the United States Department of Justice to resolve all pending extradition requests between the two nations.
This planned engagement arises at a moment when extradition issues have emerged as a significant concern in the legal and diplomatic relations between Ghana and the United States, especially following the successful extradition of Sedina Tamakloe Attionu, the former Chief Executive Officer of the Microfinance and Small Loans Centre (MASLOC), to Ghana.
Sedina was extradited to Ghana on Tuesday, June 9. Her return to the country comes after years of legal proceedings and efforts by Ghanaian authorities to obtain her extradition after she failed to appear in court during the trial process.
Upon her arrival in Ghana, she was taken into custody by officials from the Ghana Police Service and the Ghana Prisons Service.
Authorities are currently carrying out the necessary administrative and legal steps to initiate her prison sentence.
In discussing the broader implications of this development, Felix Kwakye Ofosu stated in a Facebook post that the government aims to utilize the forthcoming meeting between the Attorney-General and U.S. Department of Justice officials to enhance cooperation on extradition matters and address all outstanding requests involving both countries.
The discussions are anticipated to encompass several high-profile cases that are currently drawing public interest.
Among these is Ghana’s request for the extradition of former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta.
The former minister has been under investigation by state authorities, and the government has expressed its commitment to exploring all legal avenues to ensure his return if extradition becomes necessary.
The bilateral discussions are also expected to address requests originating from the United States.
U.S. authorities are said to be pursuing the extradition of several individuals linked to multiple criminal investigations and prosecutions, among whom is a suspect known as Abu Trica.
