The Bank of Ghana (BoG) has instructed Mobile Money Fintech Limited (MMFL) to halt the implementation of its intended 0.75% fee on direct wallet-to-bank transfers, pending additional consultations.
The proposed fee, which was initially set to take effect on June 1, 2026, has been suspended to facilitate wider stakeholder engagement and review.
The wallet-to-bank transfer fee announced by MMFL had ignited public discourse regarding its potential effects on digital transactions and financial inclusion.
In a press release issued on Tuesday, May 26, 2026, the central bank stated that this decision is part of its efforts to ensure equity in the mobile financial services ecosystem while safeguarding consumers.
“This decision demonstrates our dedication to ensuring that any modifications to charges within the mobile financial services ecosystem are implemented fairly, protect consumers, and promote their financial wellbeing,” the statement indicated.
The Bank of Ghana did not specify when the consultations would be completed or if the proposed fee would ultimately be amended or rescinded.
