The government, through the Transport Ministry, is putting forward a new bill to change the name of Kotoka International Airport (KIA) to Accra International Airport.
During a press conference on February 3, 2026, Majority Leader Mahama Ayariga confirmed that the Ministry will soon submit a bill to Parliament for the renaming of the airport.
“We are changing the name of our airport from Kotoka International Airport to Accra International Airport. Therefore, a bill will be presented by the Minister for Transport to facilitate the name change from Kotoka International Airport to Accra International Airport. Consequently, the Accra International Airport bill will also be introduced,” he stated.
This name change occurred 58 years after Ghana’s primary aviation hub was designated as Kotoka International Airport (KIA).
Public discussions regarding the name of Kotoka International Airport (KIA) re-emerged last year, with renewed demands from various segments of the public, civil society organizations, and commentators for the airport to be renamed.
Proponents of the suggested change argue that naming Ghana’s principal international airport after Lt. Gen. Emmanuel Kwasi Kotoka, a significant figure in the 1966 coup d’état, does not align with the country’s democratic principles and constitutional history.
They assert that national monuments and infrastructure should commemorate individuals associated with democracy, unity, and constitutional governance.
The KIA accommodates millions of passengers each year, serving as a crucial entry point to the nation.
