The Northern Regional Minister, Ali Adolf John, has requested a one-week respite for 147 students of Tolon Senior High School who were significantly impacted by a fire incident that destroyed the girls’ dormitory on the morning of Monday, February 2.
This decision came after the Regional Minister visited the school, accompanied by the Northern Regional Director of Education and the Deputy Administrator of GETFund, to evaluate the damage and collect first-hand information regarding the incident.
The fire resulted in the displacement of approximately 346 students overall, with 147 students losing all their personal belongings as several dormitories on the upper floor of the facility were consumed by the flames.
During an interview conducted during the visit, the Minister voiced his profound concern regarding the rising frequency of fire incidents in second-cycle institutions nationwide, labeling the trend as alarming and in need of immediate attention. “I am confident that within this one week, the headmaster and his management team will devise temporary solutions to address the situation upon the students’ return. For those who will remain on campus, we will investigate alternative arrangements and determine the best way to manage the circumstances,” he remarked.
The Ghana National Fire Service has since managed to control the fire, while investigations are currently underway to ascertain the cause of the outbreak. Authorities have indicated that additional support measures will be announced as assessments progress.
