The National Chief Imam, Sheikh Dr Osman Nuhu Sharubutu, has extended his congratulations to Dr Mahamudu Bawumia following his success in the New Patriotic Party’s presidential primary, highlighting it as a robust endorsement of Ghana’s democratic identity and religious diversity.
Dr Bawumia triumphed in a closely contested primary held on Saturday, January 31, 2026, overcoming four other candidates to obtain the party’s nomination.
He commended the NPP for organizing a peaceful congress, encouraging party members to view this as a chance to reaffirm their dedication to internal democracy, constitutional governance, and interfaith cooperation.
In a statement released on Monday, February 2, the Chief Imam also acknowledged the other candidates for their concession in a spirit of unity and reconciliation, emphasizing that their actions demonstrated political maturity and respect for democratic principles.
He emphasized that although methods of internal party contests may vary, the common goal of national advancement must always take precedence.
Furthermore, His Eminence praised the Ghana Police Service and the Electoral Commission for what he characterized as transparency, accountability, and fairness in the execution of the primary, which enhanced the integrity of the process.
“Democracy is a collective responsibility and a civic obligation. When we all effectively fulfill our roles in the pursuit of democratic prosperity, ultimately, we will not recall the discomfort of our individual challenges, but rather the comfort of our shared achievements,” concludes His Eminence.
