Interior Minister Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak called for managing migration with both fairness and compassion, stressing the need to balance national security with the human aspects.
He delivered these remarks as the keynote speaker at the Centre for Migration Studies’ (CMS) 20th anniversary celebration.
This celebration marks two decades of research, policy engagement, and leadership in migration studies, centered around the theme, “The Realities of Free Movement in Africa: Governance Norms and Social Transformation.”
The Minister acknowledged that the extensive research conducted by CMS has significantly enhanced his understanding of the human dimensions of migration, particularly in relation to national security and internal governance.
Muntaka further emphasized the significance of a national development framework where specialized research centers like CMS act as crucial links between knowledge creation and policy implementation.
He acknowledged that the Centre’s efforts have played a key role in establishing Ghana as a prominent center for migration research in Africa and expressed gratitude for CMS’s ongoing contributions to national and regional policy discussions.
In her address, Professor Mary Biatekmaa Setrana, Director of the Centre for Migration Studies, shared a brief overview of her academic and professional journey, underscoring strategic initiatives aimed at increasing postgraduate enrollment, enhancing research output, and improving the Centre’s relevance to policy and practice.
She reaffirmed CMS’s dedication to promoting rigorous, policy-relevant research on migration and mobility across Africa.
The launch was also attended by the Minister for Labour, Jobs and Employment, Rashid Pelpuo, the Minister for Gender, Children and Social Protection, Dr. Agnes Naa Momo Lartey, the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ghana, Professor Nana Aba Appiah Amfo, who served as Chairperson of the event, members of the diplomatic community, and staff from the University of Ghana.
