President John Dramani Mahama is anticipated to inaugurate the 77th Annual New Year School and Conference on Tuesday, January 6, 2026, at the Great Hall of the University of Ghana, Legon.
This three-day event, concluding on Thursday, January 8, 2026, will revolve around the theme: “Building the Ghana We Want Together for Sustainable Development.”
President John Dramani Mahama will serve as the special guest of honour during the opening ceremony, while Dr Ishmael Yamson, the Board Chairman of MTN Ghana, will present the keynote address. Additionally, Ms Marietta Brew Appiah-Oppong, the Chairperson of the University of Ghana Council, is also expected to be in attendance.
The conference is being organised by the School of Continuing and Distance Education in partnership with the College of Education at the University of Ghana.
During the launch of the conference in November 2025, Mr Goosie Obuadum Tanoh, the Presidential Advisor on the 24-Hour Economy, remarked that the theme encapsulated the national sentiment, emphasising that Ghanaians seek stable employment, dependable markets, and a well-structured economy that fosters growth.
“The theme urges us to critically assess what changes are necessary for Ghana to thrive in an increasingly competitive global landscape,” he stated.
Mr Tanoh elaborated that the 24-Hour Economy and Accelerated Export Development Programme (24H+) signifies the government’s unified approach to Ghana’s transformation agenda.
He indicated that the programme prioritises productivity, trade, and competitiveness, aiming to establish a dependable industrial economy that generates opportunities for everyone.
He noted that the 24H+ programme is organised around three fundamental pillars intended to tackle the country’s primary structural challenges.
The first pillar emphasises production through initiatives such as Growth24, Make24, Build24, and Show24. The second pillar aims to enhance supply chains and market systems, while the third pillar centres on placing people at the heart of national transformation.
Throughout the years, the New Year School and Conference has functioned as a venue for specialists, policymakers, and scholars to discuss significant national matters and propose recommendations to aid in the development of Ghana.
