Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, a leading contender for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer position, has claimed that the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) has reservations about him due to his involvement in the 2016 elections. He further states that these sentiments prompt the NDC to attempt to influence his bid for the NPP’s flagbearer role.
During an address to supporters in the Okaikwei South Constituency, Dr. Bawumia stated that the NDC often responds critically when his name is mentioned, attributing this response to the effects of his 2016 campaign.
“The 2016 campaign was quite intense, which is why the NDC holds a negative view of me,” he stated, emphasizing that he remains steadfast despite the ongoing criticism.
He further asserted that the NDC is diligently working to thwart his chances of winning the NPP’s upcoming primary, which is scheduled for January 31, and is encouraging delegates to support another candidate instead.
“Are you aware that the NDC does not want you to vote for me in the primary, but rather for someone else? Why should a different party influence who becomes the candidate for your party? I firmly believe that the constituents of Okaikwei South will not permit that,” he expressed.
The NPP primary, scheduled for January 31, 2026, is anticipated to be highly competitive, featuring five candidates: former Assin Central MP Ken Ohene Agyapong; Abetifi MP and former Minister for Food and Agriculture, Dr. Bryan Acheampong; Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia; former Minister of Education, Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum; and former General Secretary of the party, Kwabena Agyei Agyepong.
