President John Dramani Mahama has urged Ghanaians both domestically and abroad to embrace their history and identity, emphasizing that this is a crucial step towards shaping Ghana’s future and making significant contributions to global advancement.
During his address at the Diaspora Summit 2025 in Accra on Friday, December 19, President Mahama remarked that the event signifies the commencement of a purposeful effort to reclaim overlooked narratives and to amplify Ghana’s voice in narrating its own history. The summit was conducted under the theme “Resetting Ghana: The Diaspora as the 17th Region.”
The President stated that comprehending and taking ownership of the authentic stories from the past enables a community to progress with assurance and respect.
“By discovering and claiming the narratives of our history, particularly those that have been marginalized, we can genuinely understand ourselves,” he articulated. “This self-awareness grants us the strength to authentically and honorably inscribe ourselves not only into our future but also into the future of all humanity.”
President Mahama clarified that the summit represents more than just a ceremonial gathering; it marks the initiation of a larger movement focused on restoring Ghana’s historical, cultural, and intellectual legacy.
“This is the reason we have convened at this diaspora summit today, to earnestly commence the reclamation process, to initiate the writing of our own narrative and to advance vigorously,” he declared. “We are reclaiming everything that rightfully belongs to us.”
The Diaspora Summit 2025 convened policymakers, traditional leaders, scholars, entrepreneurs, and members of the Ghanaian diaspora from around the globe to explore strategies for enhanced engagement and national rejuvenation.
