The Okada Riders Association has expressed its approval of the Road Traffic Amendment Bill, 2025, which permits the commercial operation of motorcycles, tricycles, and quadricycles nationwide.
The bill received parliamentary approval on Thursday, December 11, 2025. This new legislation is anticipated to improve road safety, generate employment opportunities for the youth, and provide a comprehensive framework for regulating the road transport sector.
Additionally, it raises the threshold for assessing alcohol levels in drivers as part of a wider initiative to mitigate drink-driving incidents and associated accidents.
In response to this development, Solomon Akpenaba, the Public Relations Officer of the Okada Riders Association, stated that this initiative would facilitate the organisation of operations and enhance the reputation of commercial riders.
“Previously, riders operated without unions and even without uniforms. However, the government has now declared its intention to provide uniforms and formalise their status. Moving forward, we will be enhancing our services.
“It will be easy to distinguish between legitimate Okada riders and others simply by observing our registration number plates. Therefore, by 2026, the criminals who use motorbikes and cause us to be unfairly blamed will be eliminated, and the public will recognise that we are not all the same,” he remarked.
During a parliamentary session on Wednesday, December 10, the Minister for Transport, Joseph Nikpe Bukari, indicated that the amendment aims to purify road transport services, reinforce safety measures, and impose stricter penalties on violators.
