The European Union (EU) has reiterated its dedication to assisting Ghana in maintaining its security and stability, especially as various forms of instability continue to arise throughout West Africa.
These comments were made in light of the political turmoil in Niger, Burkina Faso, and Mali — all governed by military regimes — which have declared their intention to exit ECOWAS.
In an interview conducted on Tuesday, September 30, 2025, the EU Ambassador to Ghana, His Excellency Rune Skinnebach, emphasized that Ghana serves as a vital stabilizing force in the sub-region, particularly during a period when its neighboring nations are experiencing increasing insecurity.
“The EU possesses several tools in this regard. We have our traditional cooperation. The most significant is the ongoing security and defense initiative. Additionally, we are in the process of forming a partnership focused on security and defense,” Mr. Skinnebach stated.
He disclosed that the EU has already provided substantial quantities of military equipment to Ghana, characterizing this action as “unusual” yet essential for enhancing the country’s capabilities.
“We aspire for Ghana to remain not only a bastion of peace but also a stabilizing influence within the Sahel region, which is marked by considerable instability from various actors, many of whom do not have good intentions,” he further remarked.
While recognizing the challenges that lie ahead, the EU representative underscored that even the destabilizing elements in neighboring countries acknowledge Ghana’s significance as a secure nation, a situation he referred to as the country’s “luck.”
