The Ghana Grid Company (GRIDCo) has submitted a request to the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) seeking approval to more than double its transmission service tariff, increasing it from the current rate of 5.6422 pesewas per kilowatt-hour to 12.9768 pesewas per kilowatt-hour by 2025.
This request signifies a 130 percent rise in comparison to the rate for Q1 2025.
In its submission, GRIDCo contended that the current tariff is insufficient and emphasized the necessity for a cost-reflective rate to facilitate its operations.
For the review period spanning 2026 to 2030, the utility company anticipates that tariffs will fall between 13.04 pesewas and 13.44 pesewas per kilowatt-hour, not including statutory levies.
Samuel Kow Acquah, the Acting Director of Corporate Strategy at GRIDCo, provided an explanation for the significant increase in the first year, indicating that future adjustments would be minimal.
“We have examined numerous cost rationalization strategies to avoid transferring some costs to consumers. In the first year, we require such a substantial increase in our tariff to GHS12.96 per kilowatt-hour… Following the first year, a 0.5% increase will suffice to maintain our operations.
“If we can achieve that, we can return 0.5% to you. Therefore, there will not be a reduction of 0.5% in 2027, and for the subsequent years, from 2028 to 2030, we are planning increments of 0.1% and 2.5% in 2030.
“Thus, it is crucial that we obtain what we are requesting so that we can systematically implement all the investments we have outlined within the specified years,” he added.
