Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa has declared that Ghana will set up a new consulate in Massachusetts, USA, as part of its initiative to enhance the nation’s global diplomatic footprint.
This new consulate will increase Ghana’s diplomatic missions in the United States to three, complementing those already established in New York and Washington, D.C.
During an orientation for newly appointed envoys in Accra on Monday, September 1, 2025, Mr. Ablakwa revealed that Ghana currently maintains 75 missions around the globe, which include 13 high commissions, 48 embassies, and 14 consulates.
He noted that President John Dramani Mahama has instructed the ministry to expand its consular network to better assist Ghanaians living abroad and to strengthen international collaboration.
“One of the significant outcomes from the President’s visit to Singapore is an agreement to enhance bilateral relations and establish permanent representations. Next year, we plan to inaugurate consulates in Singapore, Dublin in Ireland, and Massachusetts the USA,” he remarked.
Mr. Ablakwa clarified that this decision is a response to persistent requests from the Ghanaian diaspora in the United States, who contend that the missions in New York and Washington are inadequate for the extensive diaspora community.
“Ghanaians in the US have consistently expressed concerns that New York and Washington cannot adequately represent a country with 58 states. Consequently, President Mahama has sanctioned the establishment of a new mission in Massachusetts,” he stated.
The minister underscored that this expansion will facilitate better access to consular services, foster trade and investment opportunities, and strengthen cultural and diplomatic ties with partner nations.
