The Ablekuma Central Municipal Assembly has declared a collaborative initiative with the Ghana Police Service to implement a new decongestion effort at the Agbogbloshie onion market.
This location, which was once inhabited by thousands of scrap dealers, became internationally recognized as one of the most polluted e-waste dumping grounds due to the prevalent incineration of electronic waste.
On July 1, 2021, the Greater Accra Regional Coordinating Council, with assistance from armed police, dismantled structures and removed approximately 10,000 scrap dealers as part of a significant cleanup operation. A portion of the land was subsequently designated for the establishment of a district hospital under the government’s Agenda 111 initiative.
Nevertheless, four years later, scrap dealers have made their way back to the site, reclaiming sections of the land and raising fresh concerns regarding environmental degradation and public health hazards.
During a meeting held on Thursday, August 28, 2025, between the Greater Accra Regional Minister and the Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs), Ablekuma Central Municipal Chief Executive Frank Nkansah characterized the situation as concerning and assured residents that prompt measures would be taken.
“In collaboration with the regional minister, we have resolved to decongest the Agbogbloshie onion site once more. She has appointed a representative, and the Inspector General of Police has also assigned a team to assist us.
In two weeks, we will also undertake a cleanup of the South Industrial Area, in partnership with the Ghana Prisons Service,” he stated.
