The United Kingdom has announced the appointment of Mr. Christian Rogg as its forthcoming High Commissioner to Ghana, effective July 2025. He will take over from Ms. Harriet Thompson, who is transitioning to a new position within the UK’s Diplomatic Service.
This announcement was made on April 17, 2025, by the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) of the UK.
Mr. Rogg is a highly experienced development economist and diplomat, boasting over twenty years in international development and foreign service, with prior roles throughout Africa, including a significant assignment in Ghana.
From 2006 to 2009, he held the position of Head of the Governance and Growth Team at the UK’s Department for International Development (DFID) in Accra, where he developed a comprehensive understanding of Ghana’s political and economic environment.
Currently, Mr. Rogg is the Director for Development and Open Societies at the FCDO, a role he has occupied since 2023. Before this, he served as Director for Development, Parliament, Coordination, and Capability from 2021 to 2023. His diplomatic experience encompasses senior positions in Ethiopia, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Nigeria, Vietnam, and the UK.
His career spans both public and private sectors, with previous positions at Merrill Lynch, the Inter-American Development Bank, and PricewaterhouseCoopers. Additionally, he has academic experience as a researcher and lecturer at the University of Oxford.
Mr. Rogg’s return to Ghana is seen as a significant homecoming and is anticipated to enhance continuity and invigorate UK-Ghana relations, especially in trade, security, education, and climate initiatives.
Ms. Harriet Thompson, who has been High Commissioner since 2021, is recognized for her efforts in bolstering diplomatic, economic, and cultural connections between the two nations. The specifics of her next assignment have yet to be officially revealed.
