The General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Fifi Fiavi Kwetey, has dismissed the likelihood of a runoff in the forthcoming general elections scheduled for December, expressing strong belief in the party’s ability to achieve victory in the initial round.
During an interview, Mr. Kwetey conveyed the NDC’s optimism regarding its chances in the presidential contest. Nonetheless, he recognized that the ultimate result will hinge on the choices made by the Ghanaian electorate.
“We are confident that we will secure victory in the first round. However, the final decision rests with the people of Ghana,” he stated.
Kwetey noted that while the Electoral Commission (EC) has not fulfilled their expectations, he remains hopeful about the party’s prospects for success.
He also highlighted the challenges that have led to delays in special voting in the Western and Eastern regions.
“We truly have no alternatives, which is a rather unfortunate statement to make. The Jean Mensa-led electoral commission has claimed to be the best in our history, yet the evidence does not support this assertion.
“In addition to the issues we have encountered with them, which do not pertain to their capacity to perform this role independently and impartially, as was seen with former EC leaders Afari Gyan and Charlotte Osei, we have concerns regarding the competence of the EC’s leadership. The postponement of special voting in two major regions indicates that they have not effectively managed their responsibilities.”
