The Electoral Commission (EC) is holding a Special Voting exercise today, Monday, December 2, in 14 regions of Ghana, but not in the Eastern and Western Regions. This event allows security personnel, media workers, and election officials who will be working on December 7 to vote early. About 131,478 voters, which is just 0.007% of the total 18,741,159 registered voters, are expected to participate. The Eastern and Western Regions are excluded because the EC needs to redo and secure ballot papers after a security issue. Their special voting has been moved to Thursday, December 5, to maintain election integrity.
Jean Mensa, the Chairperson of the EC, assured everyone that the voting process will be smooth and credible. She reminded participants to follow the rules and show valid ID when voting, which will take place from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. at designated polling centers. Votes from this special exercise will not be counted right away; they will be added to the overall results on December 7. Each Constituency Returning Officer will record the results separately before combining them with the main election counts.
To ensure safety, the National Election Security Taskforce is monitoring polling stations. Political parties have sent their agents to observe the process, and various organizations will also have observers present. The EC has asked for calm and cooperation from everyone involved, highlighting that these actions aim to ensure a free, fair, and credible election.
